This presentation explored how blockchain technology can be used for the generation of secure digital credentials and academic certificates in higher education institutions. The session focused on the implementation of smart contracts and how blockchain architectures can enhance interoperability, transparency, and alignment with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).

Technological Analysis

Several blockchain platforms were analyzed where Ethereum (with smart contracts written in Solidity) is highlighted. Although Ethereum was considered a strong candidate due to its maturity and robust ecosystem, HyperLedger Fabric was ultimately selected as the most suitable framework for this implementation.

Implementation Strategy

Initially, the proposal involved storing all certificate information directly on-chain, with all interactions mediated by smart contracts (chaincode). However, after identifying key limitations — including consensus requirements, legal compliance constraints, and privacy concerns — the architecture evolved.

The final design adopts a hybrid model:

  • Personal data remains off-chain.
  • The blockchain stores verifiable identifiers (URIs/hashes).
  • Interoperability interfaces are integrated to improve system communication and verification processes.

This approach balances transparency and immutability with regulatory and privacy requirements.

Impact and Results

Despite scalability and privacy challenges, the proposed architecture represents a significant advancement in the technological transfer of digital credentials and certificates within the educational sector. Initial results are promising, demonstrating the feasibility of a system capable of preventing certificate forgery. This contributes to:

  • Increased public trust in academic credentials
  • Improved verification efficiency for professionals and organizations
  • Strengthened security in educational information systems

Migrate to blockchain ecosystem for certification can enhance opportunities related with emission and validation towards a more one and transparent world.
